S. and I saw one of these at Greenfield Village last week and then we spotted this one on Belle Isle. S. wants one as a pet - thinks they're really cute. They may have orginally been called chitmunk from the Ottawa word Jidmoonh meaning "red squirrel". Other early forms of the name for chipmunks are chipmonk, chipmuck, chipminck and chip squirrels. They are also called striped squirrels, chippers, munks, timber tigers and ground squirrels. They are generally the size of human hand and have long burrows with concealed entrances. The sleeping quarters are extremely clean. For more information on the Eastern Chipmunk see here.
