Mom spotted his hairy beast near the shore at Belle Isle. S. and I saw one on the island last year but did not get photos. This time we were camera-ready. Groundhogs are also called woodchucks and in some places are called land-beavers or whistle-pigs. S, notes that, unknown to most of us, they are good swimmers and tree climbers. They hibernate in winter and build a separate burrow for the winter months. These big marmots typically live two to three years but can live as long as six years in the wild.
